Chief Development Officer

Chief Development Officer, American Nashville, TN, The Chief Development Officer fosters a culture of philanthropy within the American Red Cross.  Leads staff and volunteers and philanthropy and fund development.  The Chief Development Officer (CDO) leads and directs a development team in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of all aspects of fundraising for the American Red Cross. This position is responsible for leading a strong revenue-oriented culture based on market driven targets and management fundamentals. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILTIES:  Develop and implement multi-year strategic fundraising plans, cultivate internal and external constituents and monitor trends in development and the giving community.  Lead financial development team.  Establish goals, objectives, and standards for the financial development team; lead the financial development team to meet and exceed these goals and objectives; oversee develop of and manage the financial development budget.  Develop and execute the fundraising strategy in order to significantly grow the annual fund in the short term, while diversifying the funding base towards long-term stability.  Provide leadership to establish relationships to work effectively with top donors and volunteers and to develop fund raising programs utilizing volunteers in key roles. Develop and lead a comprehensive plan for identification and cultivation of donors, donor relations, and volunteer support and stewardship.  Significant solicitation and portfolio management is required.

REQUIREMENTS:  Bachelor’s degree required.  Advanced degree preferred.  CFRE preferred.  Five years experience in a progressive fundraising/financials development positions and five years in a leadership/management position with fundraising experience, excellent “people skills and a willingness to travel.  Affinity with the overall mission of the American Red Cross is required.   Must possess excellent interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication skills, and presentation skills.  Must have a minimum of five to seven years direct fund raising experience, including major gifts, capital campaigns, and planned giving knowledge and experience.   Must have led a fund development office/team that successfully combined brand marketing and fundraising into concrete financial results.  Must possess knowledge of tax implications of charitable contributions for individuals.  Demonstrated team player with the ability to foster teamwork among Board Members, colleagues, and departmental staff.
